An Idyllic Life

In the village of Kulhan lives the Chaohan family. Father looks after the store while Laksmi tends to the four cows and the small vegetable garden. There are five cows now with the addition of one new calf.

They have three sons and Vishal comes home from school at 4 in the evening where he helps with the store in between homework. Sometimes he attends tuition walking the distance with his friend. Here they all walk to wherever they want to go.

They live an idyllic life. It is sedate by modern city standards but they are happy.

In another world, clients seek priests and gurus and feng shui masters for that little magical short cut that will provide them instant money and success. Who could fault them when with every turn, there are promises of what wonders feng shui can do for you. Get an aquarium and activate your wealth corner, sleep with your head pointing one way and your love life will improve, place a gourd somewhere to get rid of that malady that has been troubling you or have a brush on your desk to make your son brainier. The list goes on.

In Kulhan, what need is there for feng shui? Father goes to chop some leaves from the Da’ao tree as fodder for their cows. Everything is available and enough. The children are good kids and light always shine from their eyes. They never fail to greet and smile.

What an idyllic life. Vimala will agree and nod her head the way only Indians can as she carries home that bundle of firewood on her head.
