Apartments Feng Shui – a Tip or Two

by Lai SW on August 5, 2011

Feng Shui for apartments takes into consideration the external and the internal arrangements. This would view the terrain, neighbouring buildings, natural features, the direction or orientation along with the layout, both external as well as internal.

This apartment is one of the many new developments in the Klang Valley. It is built on gently sloping land, crisscrossed by a river and highway.  It slopes gently from the north, from the entrance down to the south. The east portion is lower than the west.

Its main gate is located at the north of the complex with a three storey carpark building and refuse collection annexed to the west. This can be seen on the simple sketch.

Basing on the layout, ingress and egress, the best block would be block A with those towards the northeast and east preferred. It captures the current vitality as well as takes advantage of the flow of the terrain and the relative arrangement of the buildings.

The west portion of the complex, as mentioned before, is where the multi storeyed carpark and rubbish collection is. There is a side entry gate here. It fronts a slightly lower green area. This is unfortunate as the qi has not been taken advantage of. With such an arrangement, one of the potential vitality is lost. Occupants should avoid using this entry but as most people like convenience, they will very likely enter from here as this avoids having to drive or walk round to the front to enter. If this continues, the apartment would suffer from lack of vitality inviting an imbalance of weak yang energy along with discolored yin energy.

Referring to block A, the choice would be from the 10th floor to the 15th with the higher floors avoided. The lower floors are discounted because it conflicts with the layout especially those nearest the entrance where the security building is. Naturally each unit will have to be considered separately based on their individual merits.

There will be a few points to avoid when choosing the actual unit. Because of the floor layout, there will be units which have the door just off the lifts. They would seem to be most convenient as occupants would not have to walk too far before reaching their apartments. My experience with this is that units adjoining lifts very often suffer from magnetic distress. Strictly, this would cause fluctuations of the magnetic field and as such do not make them a good feng shui choice.

As in the case of the apartment mentioned here, there are two unfavorable points. These two points are useful to remember when selecting any apartment. The first is that the door suffers from being cut by daylight. Right in front of the door there is a shaft or thin blade of light slashing directly at the door. The effect is made more prominent due to the east west orientation of the block making this a poor feng shui choice.

The other point is that there are units with angled doors  and irregular foyers. I have often why designers love doors angled off the orientation of the building itself. Probably it seemed novel or that the designer had privacy in mind but in so designing, much of the fengshui is compromised.
