Objects of art like paper cuttings, figurines are often used in decorations. I did write on the use of paintings before.
Fengshui as is perceived today dwells very much on “cures”. Advice are varied depending on which aspect is emphasized. I am sure you would have heard of music boxes, figurines, pictures and paintings, Chinese calligraphy brushes, pagodas, animal figurines and unbelievably, even the ubiquitous chinese cooking wok and satellite dish as well as representation of the five elements buried underground.
A reader mentioned that somewhere it was advised that no “cures” should be implemented in the bedroom. Perhaps what is referred to are figurines and art objects or some representation of the 5 elements. They could be “confrontational” objects like sharp pointed objects or a depiction of a ferocious animal or deity.
To not “cure’ the bedroom would amount to saying that the bedroom must not receive the Feng Shui treatment which does not make sense. As a general rule, the bedroom is a place where we retire and rejuvenate so it becomes even more important to have it done well. I have a brief write or two on this
What happens if yours is a one room apartment? For a start, even a smallish living space has its fengshui. To Feng Shui it well, remember that whatever treatment you give to your space has to be proportionate to the space that you have. It would likely be where you would eat, sleep and maybe work.
There are many aspects to look at so to keep it simple, it would be good to look at a few important ones.
1 Door and entrance
Try to create an entrance. The space just beyond the door line is the entrance. A clever placement of a rack, low stand or translucent curtain would create this entrance. Make it slightly set back so that it is comfortable as you enter and create a space which becomes essentially the space necessary to separate it from the room proper. A slight set back aids in retaining qi, acting like a reservoir.
2 Freshness
The big challenge with a small space is fresh air and light. Odour tends to collect and stay and they get into everything. If it is not managed, it would become bad fengshui.
3 Decorative paintings and objects
Touching on this in a brief way, ferocious looking pictures are not recommended. There are lovely depictions of dragons too but most do not qualify for a small bedroom. As far as the dragon goes, an old master taught me that in uncommon fengshui, the dragon is a creature of the skies and having it cooped in a room is not advisable.
More on the subject of pictures and so forth, how do we know which goes where? Again, only general rules here. Basing on the idea that the bed is the ‘quiet area’, have softer energy here. Often seen is a huge display above the headboard. This often do not go well. If it is something that inspires goodness and virtue, light in weight and calming, that’s fine. And of course, fix it well or suffer for it.
Apart from the sleeping area, there will be space for an area which serves as space for activities other than sleep. At this area, decorate and enhance it with the objects that display creativity and action. Stuff that mean something, stuff that is “you”, these you can place here. The iPad or tablet can go anywhere. Needless to say, a touch of direct sun or daylight helps.
There has been too much emphasis on orientating the room into sectors, commonly eight directions.
Afternote: On the matter of art made by monks, I would add that what is important is that the artist has done it with good thoughts even though it may be for a commercial reason (monks and commerce should not mix). There is great power in loving energy. If you are having a meal and the chef and people around are arguing and fighting, that meal won’t taste so great, irrespective of the reputation of the restaurant.

This book is a translation of a text by FengShui Master Jiang Da Hong (ca1640) with my explanations and comments. The root text is a section on yang dwellings from his book “5 Songs of the Heavenly Principles”.

There is common logic in Feng Shui. As cures they correct certain positions and structure of an to create a more convenient and comfortable space that will lessen our distractions and worries. Like putting something heavy above the headboard like a huge painting can cause worry as anytime this can fall unto the bed. Placing the bed to the wall near the door can cause neck cramps as we will need to look sideways every time somebody is coming in.
I just purchased this framed painting
colours – blue/green
Ideal Location – Southwest Wall
The painting looks perfect in our living room except that it’s too large. I’m wanting to know if this artwork comes in other sizes.
